Day 6 Paris: The Vanves flea market - marché aux puces

Samedi 22 Août , ici à 2015

Penny and I were in brocante heaven today!

We took the train out to the southern periphery of Paris to the Porte de Vanves metro station  to visit the famous Marché de Vanves (flea market).

While Tripadvisor reviews of this market vary widely
from - 'fabulous' to 'don't bother!' - but, fortunately for us, it didn't disappoint!

Unlike the St Ouen market, which had hundreds of small shops down a myriad of aisles,
allées, this one was plein air, with open stalls lined up rather like Camberwell Sunday
market, but ran along the shady side of two tree-lined streets.

Once again, we were lucky with the weather - another fine day and, although it was hot  about 29C, we stayed relatively cool and calm as we excitedly scoured the hundreds of stalls displaying all manner of old bric a brac and many high quality antiques - jewellery,
silver ware, chinaware, pottery, linen, paintings, tools, keys, glassware, wire baskets, prints
and lithographs, books etc.

My purchases included several French pewter pieces - a lidded bowl, a small jug and a small flat plòate with a pretty edge, seen below with 2 delicious macarons I bought from a chocolate and macaron shop around the corner in Rue Mazarin.

Dinner consisted of homemade tomato and basil bruschetta, marche (watercress), brie and a small glass of red - see my pewter objects and one of Penny's prized antique wire baskets!

Here's our petite Paris kitchen!
